How to Check Phone Battery Health

Understand battery degradation, test your Android or iPhone, know replacement costs in INR, and learn habits that extend battery life.

Your phone battery is a consumable component. Every time you charge it, you wear it down slightly. After 18 months or two years, you will probably notice that your phone does not last as long on a single charge as it did when you first bought it. That is not a defect. That is how lithium-ion batteries work. Understanding the health of your phone battery helps you decide whether to adjust your charging habits, service the device, or plan for a replacement.

Signs Your Battery Is Degrading

The most obvious sign is reduced screen-on time. If you used to get through a full workday on one charge but now find yourself reaching for the charger by mid-afternoon, your battery capacity has likely dropped. Beyond that, watch for these indicators:

How to Check Battery Health on Android

Method 1: The Secret Code

Android phones have a hidden testing menu. Open your phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*. This opens the Testing menu. Select Battery Information to see details like battery health status, current temperature, voltage, and charging state. The health field will usually show "Good" or give you a percentage estimate.

This method works on many phones including older Samsung, Xiaomi, and Motorola devices. On newer phones, especially those running Android 12 or later with custom skins like OneUI or MIUI, the menu might be restricted or show limited information. In that case, move to Method 2.

Method 2: AccuBattery App

AccuBattery, available free on the Google Play Store, is the most accurate third-party tool for measuring Android battery health. The app works by monitoring how much charge your battery accepts during each charging session and comparing it against the design capacity it learns over several days of use.

Install the app and use your phone normally for at least three to five days. The longer you use it, the more accurate the health estimate becomes. AccuBattery shows a percentage under the Health tab. It also tracks wear level during charging, which gives you a clearer picture than a single snapshot reading. You can find Mi service centers or Samsung service centers near you if the app indicates severe degradation.

Method 3: Samsung Members and Xiaomi Services

If you own a Samsung phone, the Samsung Members app provides a built-in battery diagnostic. Open the app, go to Get Help, and run the Interactive Checks for battery health. Xiaomi users can access the Feedback app for similar diagnostics. These are especially useful because they compare your battery against the brand's original specifications.

How to Check Battery Health on iPhone

Apple makes this straightforward. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. The screen shows Maximum Capacity, which tells you how much charge your battery currently holds compared to when it was new. A new iPhone shows 100%.

Apple considers 80% maximum capacity as the threshold for battery replacement. When your iPhone battery drops below that level, you will see a message suggesting you service the battery. The Peak Performance Capability section below tells you whether your battery is supporting normal peak performance or if performance management has been applied to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

iPhones also show charging optimization settings like Optimized Battery Charging, which learns your daily routine and delays charging past 80% until you need the phone. Keeping this enabled helps slow degradation over time.

Understanding Battery Health Percentages

Here is how to interpret what you see:

When to Replace Your Battery

If your phone is under one year old and the battery health is below 85%, you may be eligible for a warranty replacement if the brand covers manufacturing defects. Beyond warranty, here are replacement costs in India:

If your phone has a removable battery, third-party replacement is straightforward and affordable. For sealed batteries, go to an authorized center to ensure proper waterproofing is maintained after replacement. Find options near you through our Realme service center directory.

Battery-Saving Habits That Actually Work

Charging habits matter more than most people realize. Keeping your battery between 20% and 80% is gentler on lithium-ion chemistry than routinely charging to 100% or letting it drop to 0%. If your phone supports it, enable the optimized charging feature.

Heat is the enemy of battery longevity. Leaving your phone in a hot car, using it while charging for extended gaming sessions, or charging under a pillow accelerates degradation. Keep your phone cool during charging. Use the built-in dark mode, which reduces power draw on AMOLED screens, and lower your screen brightness or enable auto-brightness to reduce constant battery drain.

Background apps drain batteries too. Review which apps have background refresh enabled and disable it for apps you do not need running constantly. Location services are particularly power-hungry, so turn off GPS for apps that do not genuinely need it.

Regularly checking battery health takes two minutes but gives you months of warning before your phone leaves you stranded. Use the methods above to stay ahead of degradation and replace the battery before it becomes a daily frustration.
